Come rain or shine, Mid Canterbury Children’s Day will bring fun and happiness on Sunday at the The Plains Vintage Railway and Historical Museum.

All ages are catered for with an under-five section as well as an array of free activities for older children, encompassing new trends such as popular pedal powered bikes, zorbing and horizontal bungy jump.

Mid Canterbury Children’s Trust member Alice Czerski said the day, held on national Children’s Day, is all about providing families with free fun rides and activities, and also includes face painting, craft activities and emergency service vehicles.

‘‘One of our the favourite activities is paintball,’’ Czerski said.

Czerski’s two children, Mia and Flynn, have been part of the day all their lives. ‘‘Its all free, kids can come and have fun and you can hang out with your friends,’’ Mia said. ‘‘Riding on the train is my favourite thing,’’ Flynn said.

Families are welcome to bring a picnic or have one of the Rotary’s free sausages and some of Talley’s hot chips. There will be water refilling stations and sunscreen available.

There is no cost for the day thanks to the hard work of volunteer committee members. They make funding applications and run fundraisers such as a recent sale of kites at the kite day at Lake Hood and Lions motorhome show.

Children’s Day isn’t the only community event the trust provides. It assists with the Matariki celebrations at Hakatere Marae, Glow in the Park, Light Up The Night and have provided fun events such as a paintball day.

* Mid Canterbury Children’s Day will be at The Plains Vintage Railway and Historical Museum, Maronan Rd, Tinwald, on Sunday, 10.30am to 2.30pm.
