Excitement has greeted installation of a pedestrian bridge alongside State Highway 1 at Tinwald.
While not the highly anticipated second Ashburton River road bridge the town has been waiting for, residents on social media have drawn parallels.
‘‘New Ashburton bridge opening soon…one-way traffic, but ahead of time’’ and ‘‘Land Transport NZ awards river bridge contract to Temu’’ were posts in Ashburton Notice Board on Facebook, with photos of the newly-completed bridge. The posts altogether received more than 350 reactions and 55 comments.
It followed government announcing last month it will fund construction of the long awaited second road bridge project, to begin next year.
The relatively diminutive pedestrian bridge was installed by the district council on Thursday last week, across Carters Creek. Rails are yet to be fitted, and access ramps installed. The area will be landscaped.
