The sound of laughter and happiness will once again reverberate around The Plains complex on Sunday for the Mid Canterbury Children’s Trust annual children’s day.

It is on March 2 from 10.20am to 2.30pm. Held for a number of years now on the first Sunday in March to mark national Children’s Day, the event is full of free and fun activities.

Attendance numbers vary often depending on the weather, but the event has traditionally attracted crowds of more than 4500.

Trust media spokesperson Janet Hadley said the aim was to cater for a diverse age range of children.

“We provide everything for free including rides on the large and small trains, face painting, opportunities for photos with cute life-sized characters, an under five-year-olds area, books to take home, community groups like scouts and the emergency services, the House of Bricks and water toys,” Hadley said.

Along with much loved favourites there will new additions including mini golf, go karting, a dino dig and an entertainment stage with dancers, singers, the silver and pipe bands, story tellers and gymnasts.

A highlight of this year would be two performances by Elgregoe the magician, at 11.30am and 1.30pm.

Ashburton Plains Rotary provide a barbecue, Talley’s provide the hot chips and organisers provide sunblock and water.

The day is on wet or fine and Hadley expects crowds will again gather to give children a day to remember.
