Mid Cantabrians are being called upon to support the Cancer Society’s major annual fundraiser, Daffodil Day, today.

Ashburton branch community co-ordinator Nicole Molloy said it would be a busy day as scores of individuals, schools and organisations participated in activities and events.

It would be a chance to raise much-needed funds for cancer research and to support those with cancer.

One in three New Zealanders will get cancer in their lifetime.

Donations go towards vital scientific research into causes and treatment of all types of cancer, as well as providing support services, education and awareness campaigns and programmes for people affected by cancer.

This week already there has been plenty happening, as 161 bunches of daffodils were delivered to individuals and businesses in Ashburton and Methven on Monday.

Vintage Car Club, Ashburton, member Murray Nelson was among the volunteers this week delivering the fresh cut yellow flowers in Ashburton.

Molloy said Cancer Society volunteers sorted freshly cut blooms, and car club members, in their classic vehicles, drove volunteers around and helped deliver the blooms.

‘‘I had 14 Cancer Society volunteers and 10 Ashburton Vintage Car Club members who were driving our volunteers around. It was a busy place. They did an amazing job, it was like a well oiled machine,’’ Molloy said.

‘‘It was beautiful actually …. to deliver these lovely little bright bunches of joy to everybody.’’

Next month the ANZ bank Daffodil Day quiz will be held at Hotel Ashburton. It will be on September 19 from 6.30pm.

Teams of up to five can enter the quiz, the cost is $75 per team. Entries can be made by emailing josh. [email protected] or anna. [email protected]

• Daffodil Day today will see collectors out and about taking donations for Cancer Society, and schools, businesses and individuals doing their own fundraising for the cause. There are multiple locations throughout Ashburton, and Methven. All funds raised in the district, stay in the district.
