Ashburton College Boys’ Tennis A Team is off to the nationals after winning the South Island Secondary Schools’ Tennis Championships at Wilding Park in Christchurch.

Held the weekend of February 22 and 23, the South Islands saw Josh Gilbert, Riley Breen, Jake Parsons and Ashton Cromie deliver straight set wins over their opponents.

It was playing against St Andrew’s College A Team and Christ’s College A Team that the boys claimed top honours.

Teacher Michael Clark said it had been fantastic to see the four team members go hard at the champs.

‘‘As expected, the opposition was tough and the matches were hard fought,’’ Clark said.

It was the first South Island tennis championship win for a college boys’ team for at least 18 years.

‘‘They are going to nationals ranked as number one, but they will face some very tough competition so will need to be on top of their game.’’

Among fundraising efforts is a super rugby supporters competition aiming to raise $1000 to support the team at the nationals, to be held at Wilding Park March 24 to 27.
