A car crashed into a power box on Allens Rd, about 7m from the Three Rivers Health building, about 11.50am on Sunday.
The crash followed a car ploughing into the building in July.
Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Alan Burgess said it was an ‘‘absolute coincidence’’ the two crashes were in the same area.
‘‘At least this time they didn’t hit the building,’’ Burgess said.
The crash had caused substantial damage to the car and the power box, affecting power in the area.
‘‘We made sure the scene was safe until the power was isolated.’’
Jeremy Adamson at EA Networks said the crash caused the loss of a substation that affected power supply to 62 customers in the Allens Rd/Elizabeth St/Allison St area. The outage did not end until 9:36pm.
“The damage was extensive and required replacement switchgear, transformer, magnefix and frame. Cost of this work is unknown at this stage, too early to say,” Adamson said.
“Our crews did a fantastic job restoring power as promptly as they did, given the extent of the damage. Our automated outage reporting map on our website provided customers with updates throughout the incident.”
Later that day, about 5pm, the brigade responded to a camp fire burning in the Ashburton River bed. Burgess said someone had abandoned the fire, and the brigade extinguished it.
On Tuesday about 4.40pm, members responded to an accidental fog cannon activation in the CBD. It was at The Phone Station on East St. Burgess said firefighters used their specialised fan to remove smoke from the building.
