Members of the Ashburton Indian Religious Society Inc held their first Diwali – Festival of Lights.

Held at the Sinclair Centre, the free event last week attracted about 280 people.

They enjoyed food and entertainment, including from Indian music and dancing groups from Christchurch and Ashburton.

Treasurer Ravind Kumar said Diwali was the most important festival on the Hindu calendar.

‘‘We would like to thank everyone for making this first ever event a successful one,’’ Kumar said.

It was so successful members had decided they would hold it again next year.

Diwali was ‘‘a time to celebrate the victory of the light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance and good over evil’’.

‘‘A beautiful opportunity to get together with friends, family and rejoice in the light of one another’s company while preparing for a fruitful year ahead,’’ Kumar said.

The festival goes for five days in October or November each year. Families undertake charitable giving, selfless service, deep cleaning and decorating homes, performing religious ceremonies and lighting up lights.
