Car horns blared across Ashburton, Fairton, Hinds and Lake Hood on Monday night for the Ashburton County Lions annual Toot For Tucker.

Teams of volunteers drove the streets, stopping frequently to pick up bags of groceries including cans, packets of pasta, snacks, treats, nappies and other items.

The 480 boxes of goods was similar to the amount collected last year. They have been passed on to St Vincent De Paul, Presbyterian Support and the Salvation Army to stock up foodbanks.

The Martin family waited at their gate to hand over their bag full of groceries to Toot For Tucker.

Ashburton County Lion organiser Julie McKimmie said people were amazing, and everyone involved was uplifted.

The vast array of donated items were packed by a busy team of helpers on the night.

‘‘Given there are more people in need and the cost of living people were so generous,’’ McKimmie said.

‘‘We are so grateful to the guides, cadets, businesses, and everyone who turns up.

“With so many people wanting to help we get through everything so quickly. I think people come along to help as they see it as a way to serve the community.

“Families come because it’s a fun and safe place for them to help.’’
