Rural and urban firefighters from all over New Zealand converged on the Methven Domain last week to compete in the annual United Fire Brigades’ Association of New Zealand Incorporated National Waterways Challenge. The challenge simulates a typical house fire scenario requiring firefighters to spring into action at a moment’s notice. The aim is to connect the hose to the pump, connect the standpipe to the hydrant and extend all the connecting hoses to a length of 25 metres, before spraying the water at an elevated target. Teams were judged on their speed, precision and team work.Â
