Planes of all shapes, sizes and colours will be in the district next month when Sport Aircraft Association hold the Great Plains Fly-In 2025.

It will be at the Ashburton Airport on Seafield Rd, from February 6 to 9.

Association administrator Dave Homewood said the event sees members fly in from across the country for acrobatics, spot landings and spot bombing competitions, and to attend seminars and socialise.

It was held every two years at the airfield and hosted by Ashburton Aviation Museum members.

Homewood said this year there were also plans for an open day event on February 8 to showcase the aviation industry.

It would be open to the public but invitations had been sent to a number of Mid Canterbury organisations such as car clubs, members of the fire museum, the Air Training Corps, scouts and cadets, inviting them to take part.

‘‘It will be a sort of open day, where we hope that various local groups can meet and mix with the aircraft builders and pilots from across New Zealand, and cross pollinate the interest in different hobbies and skills,’’ Homewood said.

‘‘We also hope to inspire younger people by showing them what aviation has to offer.’’

The Great Plains Fly-In 2025 will be held in Ashburton from February 6 to 9. An open day will be held on February 8.
