Ashburton Scout Group took line honours in the hotly contested annual Scouts Founders Day raft race on Lake Camp.

The raft race on the last weekend in February involved scouts from Allenton, Ashburton, Methven, Rakaia, Hinds and Tinwald groups.

Mania-O-Roto zone leader Dave Strong said it was great weekend of fun for more than 70 scouts, cubs, leaders and parents.

‘‘The kids enjoyed activities on the lake, along with cooking and camping,’’ Strong said.

The scouts had to construct their own six-to-ten-seater rafts.

The winning raft was made of tyre tubes.

With no wind on race day, rafts were paddle across the lake. Ashburton Scout Group last won in 2014.

The cubs also enjoyed swimming, kayaking, biscuiting and fishing.

‘‘On Sunday prior to the race more than 100 keas, cubs, scouts, leaders and parents gathered for a Scouts’ Own (church service) on the lake edge which saw the largest number attending a service for the day,’’ Strong said.

For the first time more keas and their families joined the Founders Day events. After the service, more than 40 keas, family and leaders enjoyed a walk up Mt Sunday.

Zone assistant kea leader Hayley Goodwin said the keas really enjoyed themselves.

‘‘Everyone who did the walk made it to the top and were very proud of themselves. They had lots of fun, taking plenty of time to enjoy the view and some campfire songs at the top,’’ Goodwin said.

On February 22 each year scouts around the world mark the birthday of Robert Baden-Powell, their founder.

It’s a birthday he shared with his wife, Olave. She was World Chief Guide, and guides celebrate Thinking Day the same day.
