Sixty golfers took part in last week’s annual Ashburton 9 Hole Tournament, hosted by Ashburton Golf Club.

It was held on Thursday in perfect weather conditions around the Brandon Links course with attendees from 10 clubs from around Mid Canterbury and further afield.

The grade 1 women’s competition was won by Di Surrage of Timaru with best nett score of 29. Grade 2 women’s was won by Heather Sim of Ashburton, also on 29. Dick Hansen of Ashburton won the men’s competition with 35.

Golf convener Jenny Matthews said it was the first 9 hole tournament of the year and well supported. Golfers came from Ashburton, Mayfield, Methven, Rakaia, Timaru, Geraldine, Gleniti, Pleasant Point, Ellesmere and Greendale.

‘‘Ashburton are part of the Aorangi golf area and we are the first 9 hole tournament of the year,’’ she said.

‘‘We go to the other clubs as well.’’

Matthews said the idea was for all players on the green to have fun.

Golfers played as individuals but were in groups of four on the green, often playing with others from other clubs.
