
Woollen jerseys, hats and gloves were among the many knitted goods made recently by Mid Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes members for charity.
The items, which included 84 jerseys, 92 hats, one pair of leggings, three pairs of slippers, five pairs of socks, one pair of gloves, were knitted from wool funded by grants from Advance Ashburton Community Foundation, and NBS.
The wool was bought from Ashfords and Timaru Sewing Centre.
Members of the Mid Canterbury Federation met at the Senior Centre in Ashburton on February 28 for their annual general meeting, and to unveil the woollen garments which will go to charity organisations.
Guest speakers were Carolyn Clough from Advanced Ashburton, and Christine Muff from Birthright who both spoke about their work for the community.
Isabell Page, re-elected as president, then presented the woollen garments made as community project to celebrate the federation’s 90th anniversary.
There were also 40 pairs of pyjamas donated by individual WI members to Birthright.
During the year members will hold an official celebration of the federation’s 90th anniversary.
