The wait is nearly over for the opening of the Rakaia Youth Crew space for those aged eight to 20.
To launch the space, in the former Rakaia Club rooms, the crew is holding a free gala day on January 25 including music, fun activities and prizes up for grabs.
The idea of the space came from a survey of youth in the town, conducted by the Rakaia Community Association in partnership with BASE youth centre.
Seventeen-year-old Seb Booth is a member of the crew. He said it was exciting they were about to open the space.
‘‘My involvement started with me being invited to a meeting with RAC. I’m super passionate about helping the youth and advocating for things that are wanted within the community,’’ Seb said.
‘‘The space will be a place for all to come in and hangout, chill, study and be social,’’ he said.
There is no cost to youth to use the space which is open during term time on Fridays from 3.30pm to 5.30pm. They may look to open on other days depending on the demand.
The crew will be fundraising for certain things they need to purchase and are grateful for the donations of goods they have already received. Anyone wanting to give them a hand to pick up donated furniture and items are welcome to contact them through their Facebook page.
The association gave them funding to kick start the project. Others to support the project have included BASE, HYPE Youth Health Centre and many businesses in Rakaia.
‘‘The people in Rakaia are super happy and think it’s an excellent idea, it will keep youth out of trouble and provide a safe and welcoming space for them,’’ Seb said.
Rakaia Youth Crew gala opening day at the old Rakaia Club rooms, 144 Railway Terrace West, Rakaia, starting 1pm.
