There have been tears of laughter on the set of the upcoming Variety Theatre of Ashburton’s Christmas musical.

Nuncrackers will hit the stage at the Ashburton Event Centre November 7 to 10.

Spokesperson Bridget Danielson said the stage crew had been laughing to the point of tears at some of the hilarious scenes in rehearsals.

It meant the show’s cast were proving to be the perfect contenders for bringing the hilarious script alive.

‘‘There’s a lot of good oneliners,’’ she said.

Directed by Alice Sollis and musically directed by Jo Castelow, the show is a small, intimate one with just nine cast members.

There will be two surprise appearance cameo performances as well, from longtime Variety members.

The actors and cast members are: Shayna Cairns as Sister Robert Anne, Zoe Nicholls as Sister Annensia, Jane Bowen as Sister Hubert, Desiree Backhurst as Reverend Mother, Matt Williams as Father Virgil, and Maddi Davidson, Holly Burrowes, Solly Cairns and Robert Aker as children.

Nuncrackers stars the hilarious sisters of the Broadway hit musical Nunsense.

It is promoted as ‘‘certain to tickle your funny bone and likely to tug at your heartstrings’’.

It will feature new songs, including Twelve Days Prior to Christmas, Santa Ain’t Comin’ and It’s Better to Give Than to Receive, alongside favourite carols and a Secret Santa sequence featuring audience participation.

It follows Variety’s major production for this year, Les Miserables, which staged in May.

Next year’s May production will be Mary Poppins.

  • Nuncrackers stages November 7-10. Thursday and Friday 7.30pm, Saturday 5.30pm, Sunday 2pm. Adult $55, see asheventcentre.co.nz for further prices and bookings.
