Rakaia residents are celebrating as a new location is found for the town’s post box service.
With Rakaia Health Post and Photo closing today, the post boxes were not going to be able to remain at their current location of the shop.
Last month a memo from NZ Post arrived informing box holders their PO boxes would be moving to the Ashburton box lobby, a decision that didn’t sit well with holders.
Rakaia Community Association chairman Neil Pluck said with the support of Rangitata Member of Parliament James Meager, he had secured a listening ear at NZ Post.
Thanks to Rakaia Mobil operator Tyrone Burrowes, the post boxes would now be located inside the service station near the milk chiller, accessible during opening hours 6am to 11pm seven days a week.
‘‘We are really happy about that,’’ Pluck said.
Residents have reacted positively to the news on social media, with more than 100 people liking and loving a Facebook post.
‘‘Fabulous news. Thank you Tyrone for stepping up and taking this on for the Rakaia Community,’’ said one woman.
‘‘Woo hoo…awesome persistence!!’’ said another.
