Seventeen teams from 10 schools across Mid Canterbury took part in the Subway Cup Year 5/6 Rippa rugby qualifying tournament last week at the Ashburton Showgrounds.

The tournament was hosted by the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union with players from the Mid Canterbury Women’s First XV taking up refereeing duties.

Mid Canterbury Rugby Union’s women’s rugby development officer Kirsty Arps said 170 children were taking part across three pools.

Each team had a squad of 10 players made up of five girls and five boys. They played seven-a-side games, for seven minutes a half – with at least three girls were on field at any time.

Rakaia, Lauriston, and equal qualifiers Methven Primary and Carew Peel Forest will head to the finals which will include North Otago and South Canterbury schools finalists playing in Ashburton on June 14.
