Rohit Ranjit has been sworn in as a Justice of the Peace during a swearing in ceremony at the Ashburton District Court.

Ranjit wore Nepalese national attire as he was sworn in by presiding judge Dominic Dravitski in front of his family and fellow JPs.

Ranjit moved to New Zealand with his family from Nepal.

He has been actively involved in different volunteer organisations in Ashburton, including as representative of the Nepalese community in the Hakatere Multi Cultural Council’s ethnic leaders forum.

He speaks English and Nepali.

‘‘I enjoy organising events for the community and like to find opportunities for people to learn new skills,’’ he said, of his involvement with the Mid Canterbury Newcomers Network.

‘‘I want Nepalese newcomers to feel at home and connect with other people.’’

It was his passion for continuous learning which made him decide to relocate to New Zealand.

At the age of 10, his community service journey began through scouting as a boy scout in Nepal Scouts.

The motto of the Scout movement – Be Prepared, alongside a desire for experimental learning, had always encouraged and motivated him to pursue continuous learning and give back to the community.

Prior to coming to New Zealand, Ranjit was a banker by profession. He was a branch manager in Nepal.

Since arriving in Aotearoa he had enjoyed living in Hamilton, Oamaru and is now settled in Ashburton with his wife Rabina Malla and their 18-month-old son Reyna Ranjit.

He said he enjoyed travelling, creating memories and spending time with his family and friends.
