The Mid Canterbury Combined girls hockey side narrowly lost to West Coast Combine in semifinals play last week for the Jenny MacDonald Cup at the South Island Secondary Schools Hockey Tournament at Ashburton.

They finished fourth in the tournament.

The Mid Canterbury side, wearing green and gold, had limited time together ahead of the tournament, and were made up of players from Ashburton College, Mount Hutt College and Ashburton Christian School.

They were coached by Mike Millar with manager Lisa Quinn.

West Coast were made up of players from Westland, Greymouth, South Westland Area and John Paul II high schools.

Mid Canterbury Hockey administrator Mel Doyle said Mid Canterbury eventually lost the game 0-1 and went on to face Waitaki Girls High School for the bronze placing. They lost 0-1 to place fourth.

The week-long girls tournament in Ashburton had 15 teams/schools participating.

In the lead up to the semifinals Mid Canterbury Combined impressively won their first three games, and finished top of their pool on the NBS Turf in the Ashburton Domain last Thursday.

They beat Darfield High School 3-1, Middleton Grange School 5-0, and Cromwell College 3-0.
