The rain prevented play on the first day of the Waireka Labour Weekend Association Croquet Tournament held in Ashburton.

With the sun coming out on Sunday games could get under way.

Former Waireka Croquet Club member Logan McCorkindale hit his way to success winning the tournament.

McCorkindale now plays for the United Croquet Club in Christchurch.

McCorkindale is ranked 16 in the world rankings and second in New Zealand.

The runner up was Toby Garrison from Wellington.

He is ranked 17th in the world and third in New Zealand.

Tournament organisers were very happy with how the event went.

NO PLAY DAY: The Waireka Croquet Green in the Ashburton Domain grounds was under water for the first day of tournament but by 9am the next day had drained away.

Waireka Croquet Club member Catherine McMahon said it was the first time the tournament had been held.

‘‘It is hoped it will become a bi-ennial event hosted by the Waireka Croquet Club,’’ McMahon said.

The Waireka club entered four players who won and lost games during the tournament. They were joined by 20 other players from around New Zealand.

Of the 24 players in the tournament, 19 were New Zealand representatives, five are world team champions and three are world individual champions.

The tournament was the strongest Association Croquet event on the New Zealand calendar for 2024.

‘‘It is seen as a kick start build-up for the MacRobertson Shield, the world cup of croquet which will be held in London England in August 2026,’’ McMahon said.
